Ruth Lewis: Choreographer and ballet teacher - Bristol |
Ruth Lewis trained at the Arts Educational School, Tring Park, and the Royal Ballet Upper School. She became a professional dancer, performing with Stuttgart Ballet Company, Ivor Meggido’s Jazz Group and on various television shows including Second Generation.
Having studied and been awarded the training diploma from the Royal Ballet School, Ruth began an extensive career as a ballet teacher and choreographer mostly in Bristol and the South West.
Specialising in classical ballet and national dance, Ruth now concentrates on the vocational training of local dancers aged 10 years and upwards. The development of artistic as well as technical potential of the individual has always been her main focus. Many of her students have progressed to professional schools. Currently Ruth has five pupils at Elmhurst and two at White Lodge as well as several dancers at London Studio Centre, Laine Theatre Arts, Tring Park, National Youth Ballet and Millennium.
As Artistic Director of Bristol Youth Ballet Company for 10 years, she worked with talented young dancers from all over the South West. Here, she created many original works, including the ‘Snowman’ which was performed on children’s television and her famous ‘Cardboard City’ - a day in the life of the homeless, performed to a musical score of songs by The Beatles.
Ruth has choreographed for many professional shows and her work is well known and well regarded at both local and national dance festivals.

Miss Lewis offers private coaching in her own studio in Clifton, Bristol. She coaches students for RAD and ISTD major vocational examinations from Intermediate Foundation through to Advanced II. Miss Lewis also offers coaching for auditions for professional schools and choreographs dances for Dance Festivals and auditions in all dance genres. A free style classical class for students of Advanced I standard and above is held at the Clifton Studio in Bristol on Thursday evenings.
